iPhone Fold Release Date and Price: Meet the $1,999 iPhone Duo

Apple's long rumored foldable is real, it is called iPhone Duo, and it goes on sale today. Here is what it costs, what you get, and why you may still be waiting.
iPhone Fold Release Date and Price: Meet the $1,999 iPhone Duo

For years the iPhone Fold release date was one of the most guessed at dates in tech. As of October 2026, the guessing is over. Apple announced its first foldable iPhone on September 9, 2026, and it goes on sale on Friday, October 23, 2026. It is not called iPhone Fold, though. Apple named it the iPhone Duo.

The price is as steep as the rumors suggested: $1,999 to start. Demand also looks strong enough that many buyers who did not pre-order on day one are facing long waits. Here is what Apple has confirmed, what early reports say, and what you need to know before trying to buy one.

iPhone Fold release date: the confirmed timeline

Apple revealed the iPhone Duo at its September 9 event at Apple Park, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. It was the first major launch for new CEO John Ternus, who took over from Tim Cook at the start of September, according to reporting from OPB and NPR.

Unlike the Pro models, the Duo did not go on sale in September. Apple’s press release set pre-orders for Friday, October 16, at 5 a.m. Pacific, in more than 70 countries and regions. Sales begin on Friday, October 23 in those markets, with 28 more countries and regions following on Friday, October 30. The phone ships with iOS 27.1.

iPhone Fold price for every storage tier

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the US. That is $700 more than the entry level iPhone 18 Pro, as OPB pointed out. Apple offers four storage sizes, and MacRumors lists the full US pricing below.

If you would rather spread the cost, Apple quotes $83.29 per month over 24 months through Apple Card Monthly Installments, and a lease through its Apple Upgrade program from $57.99 per month. Apple also sells an iPhone Duo Folio with a kickstand for $129 and a simpler iPhone Duo Case for $79.

Why your iPhone Duo may not arrive for months

Here is the catch. Even though sales open on October 23, MacRumors reported that US pre-order shipping dates slipped quickly, with Apple quoting delivery estimates into January 2027 within about half an hour. The same report says Apple raised its orders by 44 percent.

In practice, that means if you did not order in the first minutes, your best chance of a quicker purchase is in-store stock on launch day or later restocks. Apple has not published a statement on supply, so the exact wait will vary by model, color and country.

Tip: delivery estimates often change as Apple restocks. If a January date puts you off, it can be worth checking the Apple Store app for in-store pickup over the following weeks.

What the first foldable iPhone gets you

The Duo opens like a book. Closed, you get a 5.4 inch outer display. Open, there is a 7.6 inch inner display, which Apple says is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max screen. Both panels support ProMotion, Always On and up to 3,000 nits of outdoor brightness.

Inside is the same A20 Pro chip found in the iPhone 18 Pro models, built on a 2 nanometer process and paired with a custom vapor chamber. Apple claims up to 20 percent faster CPU performance than the A19 Pro and up to 40 percent faster graphics.

The big screen is built for multitasking. For the first time on an iPhone you can run two apps side by side in Split View, open multiple windows of the same app, and save app pairs.

  • Cameras: a 48MP Fusion Main camera with an optical quality 2x option and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide. There is no dedicated telephoto lens.
  • Front cameras: a Center Stage camera on the outside plus an under display FaceTime camera on the inner screen.
  • Unlocking: Touch ID in the side button rather than Face ID, and it works open or closed.
  • Battery: up to 24 hours of mixed use, with one battery on each side of the hinge.
  • Build: Grade 5 titanium frame, IP68 water and dust rating, eSIM only.
  • Colors: Star White and Night Sky.

The crease, the hinge and early impressions

Every foldable is judged on its crease. Apple says the inner panel uses a custom polymer cover layer, glass above and below the folding panel, and adhesives that let layers slide to relieve bend stress. A matte nano texture finish is meant to cut glare and make the crease harder to see. The hinge uses more than 100 components, according to Apple.

Independent verdicts are still arriving. MacRumors summarizes early reviews as missing Face ID, with further coverage on heat and hinge durability. Long term durability is something no review can fully answer in a few weeks, so it is worth watching owner reports over the coming months.

What we still do not know

A few questions remain open as of October 2026. Apple has not given an exact date for Apple Pencil support, only that it arrives later this year and works with the USB-C Pencil. It has also not said how quickly it can catch up with pre-order demand, so the January delivery window could shrink or grow.

Apple’s newer Siri features are another moving part. Apple says the AI powered Siri is in beta in English at launch, with more languages coming in October, and that it is not initially available in the EU. If smarter Siri is a big reason you want the Duo, check what is available in your region and language before you buy.

How it fits against other foldables

Apple is late to this category. Samsung and Huawei have sold foldable phones since 2019, and early models had well known durability problems, as OPB noted in its launch coverage. Apple’s pitch is that it waited until it could make a foldable that feels like a finished iPhone.

The price puts the Duo firmly at the top of the market. If you mainly want a big screen and do not need iOS, there are cheaper foldables available. If you live in the Apple ecosystem and want a phone that turns into a small tablet, the Duo is currently the only option.
