The GTA 6 map size has been one of the most debated details of Rockstar’s next game for years. As of October 2026, with Grand Theft Auto VI due on November 19, we finally have an official comparison from Rockstar itself, plus a preview report and a leaked map that fans have measured.
The short version: Rockstar says Leonida is around twice the size of GTA 5’s world and the biggest map it has ever made. There is still no official figure in square miles or kilometers. Here is what is confirmed, what has been estimated, and what the regions look like.
Quick facts
| Setting | Leonida, a fictional US state based on Florida |
| Official comparison | Around twice the size of GTA 5’s Los Santos and Blaine County |
| Source of that claim | Rockstar’s Aaron Garbut, in Game Informer (September 29, 2026) |
| Official area figure | None released as of October 2026 |
| Fan estimate | About 100 sq km of land, 150 to 160 sq km with ocean (Insider Gaming) |
| Main city | Vice City, based on Miami |
| Release date | November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S |
What Rockstar has confirmed about the GTA 6 map size
The firmest statement so far came in Game Informer’s preview, published on September 29, 2026. According to Dexerto’s report on that piece, Rockstar art director Aaron Garbut said the map is around twice the size of Los Santos and Blaine County, the full GTA 5 world. He also described it as Rockstar’s largest map by a clear margin.
Garbut said players will explore most of Leonida, but not every corner. Rupert Humphries, Rockstar’s senior vice president of narrative, said the story’s job is to guide players around the map, adding: “We don’t have time to take you everywhere.”
In other words, the story missions alone will not show you the whole state. Exploring on your own is part of the design.
The preview report: three times Red Dead Redemption 2
A month earlier, a different comparison did the rounds. VICE reported in August 2026 that YouTuber TGG, who attended a Rockstar preview event at Rockstar North, said the full map is about three times larger than Red Dead Redemption 2’s open world, and that Vice City alone is roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s Los Santos.
Those numbers do not line up neatly with Garbut’s. Insider Gaming notes that RDR2’s map is only slightly bigger than GTA 5’s, so three times RDR2 would mean far more than twice GTA 5. Our best guess is that the two comparisons measure different things, such as land only versus the full playable area, but Rockstar has not explained it.
When the two disagree, the safer number is the one Rockstar’s own art director gave on the record: roughly double GTA 5.
Confirmed: about twice GTA 5’s world (Rockstar, via Game Informer). Reported: about three times RDR2 (TGG, via VICE). Neither is an official area in square miles or kilometers.
How big is that in square kilometers?
Rockstar has not released an area figure, so every number you see online is an estimate. The most careful one we found comes from Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, who starts from GTA 5 and doubles it.
Insider Gaming estimates GTA 5’s world at about 75 to 80 square kilometers in total, with about 50 on land. Doubled, that puts Leonida at roughly 150 to 160 square kilometers including ocean boundaries, or about 100 square kilometers of land.
Beebom ran a similar calculation and landed a little higher, at 160 to 170 square kilometers including Vice City’s shoreline and surrounding ocean. Treat all of these as ballpark figures. The real total depends on how you measure water, mountains and areas you can see but not reach.
| Map | Size (estimate or claim) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| GTA 5 (Los Santos and Blaine County) | About 75 to 80 sq km total, about 50 sq km land | Insider Gaming estimate |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | Slightly bigger than GTA 5 | Insider Gaming |
| GTA 6 (Leonida) | Around twice GTA 5 | Rockstar, via Game Informer |
| GTA 6 (Leonida) | About 150 to 160 sq km with ocean, about 100 sq km land | Insider Gaming estimate |
| GTA 6 (Leonida) | About three times RDR2 | TGG preview, via VICE |
The regions of Leonida
Size is only part of the story. Leonida is a fictional take on Florida, and Rockstar has named several distinct areas. These come from Rockstar’s trailers and preview coverage summarized by Wikipedia and VICE.
- Vice City: the Miami-inspired main city, reportedly about twice the size of GTA 5’s Los Santos on its own.
- Leonida Keys: an island chain based on the Florida Keys.
- Grassrivers: wetlands based on the Everglades.
- Port Gellhorn: one of the other named towns.
- Ambrosia: another named area of the state.
- Mount Kalaga National Park: a wilderness region.
VICE notes the August 2026 extended look showed cities, beaches, wetlands, islands, industrial towns and rural wilderness, so the map mixes dense city with a lot of open country.
What about the leaked GTA 6 map?
In August 2026, a leaker using the name CyberLeek posted clips and images from the game, starting on August 18. Dexerto reported that the material included the Vice City map, along with combat, driving and radio footage. Rockstar and Take-Two publicly acknowledged the leaks shortly before the official extended look premiered.
Fans quickly tried to measure the leaked map, which is where many of the early size claims came from. VICE says those leaked measurements were unofficial, and while the overall scale now looks broadly right, the exact numbers may not match the final game. That is another reason to be careful with any precise figure.
Bigger is not the only goal
Rockstar’s own comments suggest it cares more about density than raw size. Garbut told Game Informer the team obsessed over every part of the map to make it feel like one cohesive place, according to Dexerto.
Dexerto also reported that Leonida will have an advanced weather system with hurricanes and strong winds that affect pedestrians. A map that changes with the weather could feel bigger than its square kilometers suggest, simply because the same street can look and behave differently from one day to the next.
We will only know how it feels to cross Leonida once the game is out on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
