Gears of War E-Day release date and how launch worked

The full release landed on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, with a single global unlock at 8am PDT, which is 11am EDT and 3pm UTC. Pure Xbox reported that early access opened at the same time of day on Thursday, October 1, for owners of the Premium Edition, the Premium Upgrade and the Collector’s Edition.

Pre-installs opened on September 29. Plan for the space: the download was about 120.5GB on Xbox Series X|S and roughly 120GB on PC. There is no Xbox One version, although Xbox Cloud Gaming is an option if your console or PC cannot handle it.

Price, editions and Game Pass

According to KeenGamer’s launch coverage, the Standard Edition costs $69.99 and the Premium Edition costs $99.99. If you already own the Standard Edition or play through Game Pass, a $30 Premium Upgrade adds the extras.

The Premium Edition bundles a Bravo Squad weapon pack, an Emergence customization pack, four seasonal customization packs and 1,000 Iron, the in-game currency. A Collector’s Edition also exists.

Game Pass is the part that trips people up. The game arrived on day one for Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers. Pure Xbox reported it is not part of the lower Essential, Premium or Starter tiers at launch, and that Premium members should expect it around October 2027. Digital copies support Xbox Play Anywhere, so one purchase covers both console and PC with shared progress.

What the story is about

E-Day is set 14 years before the original Gears of War. It covers Emergence Day itself, the surprise attack when the Locust Horde burst up from underground on the planet Sera, starting in the city of Kalona.

You see it through Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago, voiced by John DiMaggio and Carlos Ferro, alongside two new squadmates, Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes. Together they form Bravo Squad. Familiar names such as Tai Kaliso also appear.

Under the hood it runs on Unreal Engine 5 with hardware-accelerated ray tracing.

From reveal to release: a short timeline

E-Day took a little over two years to go from first trailer to launch. Xbox revealed it on June 9, 2024, at the Xbox Games Showcase with an in-engine trailer, then showed first gameplay and the release date on June 7, 2026. The game is directed by Matt Searcy, with People Can Fly co-developing alongside The Coalition.

A multiplayer open beta started on August 6, 2026, which gave players a first look at Versus and Horde Siege before launch. There was one moment of confusion along the way: a PEGI rating listed a PlayStation 5 version, but Xbox CEO Asha Sharma stated the game would be an Xbox console exclusive. As of October 2026, there is no PS5 or Switch 2 version.

Modes: campaign, Versus and Horde Siege

The campaign can be played solo, with up to four players online, or in two-player split-screen on console. Multiplayer splits into two parts.

  • Versus: 4v4 competitive modes such as Team Deathmatch and Conquest. Ranked Versus opened on October 13.
  • Horde Siege: a co-op mode for up to 12 players fighting waves of Locust and bosses.
  • Performance: up to 60fps with ray tracing in the campaign and Horde Siege, and up to 120fps in multiplayer, per the game’s Wikipedia entry.

Season 1, called Emergence, runs until December 1, 2026. The Coalition has talked about five seasons of post-launch content, with Season 2 expected in early December.

What critics said about Gears of War E-Day

Reviews were strong overall. On OpenCritic the game holds a Top Critic Average of 85, with 89% of critics recommending it across more than 120 reviews at the time of writing. Windows Central’s early roundup listed a Metacritic score of 88, with IGN and GamingBolt giving 9/10 and GameSpot giving 7/10.

The praise centered on the shooting. Reviewers liked the tighter movement, the weapons and the enemy variety, and several called the prequel story heartfelt. The complaints were also consistent: some found the wider open areas dull and bad for pacing, a few felt the boss fights were damage sponges, and GameSpot argued the core combat has not changed much in two decades.

One caveat matters. Most early reviews covered only the campaign, because multiplayer servers were not live during the review period. If Versus or Horde is your main reason to buy, player impressions from the first month are a better guide than launch scores.

Launch problems and early numbers

The first weekend was rough online. Players reported disconnections and trouble reaching online services, and The Coalition later confirmed a targeted DDoS-style attack was behind much of it. GamingHQ reported on October 13 that the worst issues had been fixed, though some players still saw occasional instability.

There was also a review-bombing campaign. GamingHQ described organized negative user ratings aimed at the new character Mags Carter, which is worth knowing if you are reading user scores.

Microsoft has not shared official sales figures. Analytics firm Alinea Analytics estimated around 230,000 copies sold and 1.7 million Game Pass players between October 1 and 6. Treat those as third-party estimates, not confirmed numbers.

Is it worth playing?

If you liked the original trilogy’s tone and you have Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass, the answer is easy: it costs you nothing extra to try. If you are paying full price, the campaign is the safer bet based on reviews, while multiplayer is still settling in after a shaky first week and The Coalition is still patching it.

Skip the Premium Edition unless early access or cosmetics matter to you. The five-day head start is over, so the main draw now is the bundle of skins and currency.

One last tip: if you pre-ordered before 7:59am PDT on launch day, KeenGamer notes you should also have the Exfil Dom character skin and a matching weapon skin set waiting in your account.
